I was assigned to photograph the fireworks for the statue's centennial celebration. On July 3, I wanted to take a few test shots of the newly illuminated landmark from the vantage point I had picked for the next night's shoot. I arrived shortly before sunset and immediately noticed a tall ship moving into alignment with the statue. I was in a race against time to set up the camera and tripod before the ship went out of frame. At the time I didn't know which tall ship I had photographed. It turned out it was HMS Bounty, a replica of the original built in 1960 for the film Mutiny on the Bounty. In 1986 the ship was owned by Ted Turner, as ownership of HMS Bounty was included with Turner's purchase of the MGM film library. The number of heads aboard in silhouette indicates a great party underway on the eve of a historic day. |
