We went to Kolkata (Calcutta) for a very short visit to the city where Anne lived with her family in the 1950's. We walked around regular neighborhoods to "people watch" as well as to touristy areas to visit the more elegant Raj-era buildings.

Sign of modern times: On elegant Park Street, a well-dressed young woman was screaming angrily into her cell phone as she strode along in the busy street - clearly a lovers' spat - she was oblivious to the fact that all the passers-by had come to a halt, agog and gaping as they listened to her tirade. Abruptly ending the call, she flung the phone to the street where it shattered and skittered under the parked cars. She did not break her runway-model stride, just kept going, disappearing around the corner of Chowringhee Street. It took several seconds for normal street activity to resume.

We took a rickety ferry across the Hoogly River to the famous Howrah train station. We then joined the crowds crossing the Howrah Bridge, the busiest bridge in the world, to get to the bustling flower market on the other side.
